Plain Beauty

June 24, 2013

Sparrows are plain. But of all the birds, they have the biggest hearts. They lack the brilliance of the bluebird, or carry a package of sunshine like the Goldfinch. They lack the psychedelics of the Western Tanager or wear the clever hat of the Stellar Jay.  Some have black crowns and some have white, but mostly they are just brown.  They can’t claim a gross beak or cross bill, no X’s or V’s, nothing notable to keep them in mind. But if you listen closely, oh, how they do sing.  They sing to share all they know of heaven and earth. Their only desire is to inhabit your dreams.
