Not Welcome

April 22, 2013

She’s back. Every year now, for the thirty we’ve lived here, a robin builds a nest in the shelter of the eves over the front door. Do all robins share an artery of knowledge that brings them to this spot year after year? Do they collectively abandon common sense? Can they not foresee that every time the door opens they will take flight in fear? Didn’t anyone explain that the man will remove the nests and do battle with sharp sticks and slippery slopes? It’s a kindness concluded from finding shattered robins’ eggs, and dead babies on our step. The world is vast. Your nests are not welcome here.
