Shenanigans

March 22, 2013
Three magpies badger the dog this morning until she abandons her breakfast and slinks under the porch. Encircling her dish, they caw self-congratulatory praise. Jaws snap greedily at the nuggets and each other, flashing in the sunlight until a dark shadow passes over, and the fury of thick wings arrest the feeding frenzy. The magpies tilt their heads in wonder, look each other up and down. Wings arced, the raven lands, and at a full clip, charges. Magpies scatter. The dog springs forth, folds back on her haunches. The raven backs up then runs into the air. Peace restored, the dog resumes her breakfast. The magpies guffaw from the safety of the fir tree having tormented the dog, the raven defeated.
